History of South Barrington Real Estate
Up to the 1950's, South Barrington was predominantly an agricultural area just south of Barrington Village. The continued demand for Chicago Suburban Real estate over Urban Chicago homes in the late 1940's and 1950's continued the encroachment of developers looking to meet this demand. Located only 30 miles Northwest of the Chicago Loop, the suburban housing boom was in full force and in 1959, a group of property owners sought to form a Village called Barrington Countryside in order to change the zoning laws to allow for 1/4 acre lots for residential development.
Residents of the area opposed the movement and quickly organized. In only three days they acquired the necessary papers to incorporate the area as The Village of South Barrington and beat out the other group more interested in mass production subdivisions prevalant at the time.
Eventually, zoning did change to allow for lot sizes of one and a half acre lots and today there are over 30 subdivisions in South Barrington. Large lots and setback standards still help maintain the area as a tranquil setting while commercial development can be seen all around the borders of South Barrington.
South Barrington Real estate is extremely desirable due to the tranquility of the residential neighborhoods and the everyday conveniences of modern life nearby. Covering aproximately 6.9 sq. miles with 4.52% of this water, the population density was only 573.6 people per square mile with 178.8 South Barrington homes per sq. mile according to U.S. Census 2000 data.

In 2000, there were 1,172 housing units with a reported 98.6% of these owner occupied and 1.4% of these used as rental homes.
